Breaking infertility stigma: Xoese Ghana appeals for treatment on NHIS

The group is marking the 2023 polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) to raise awareness on PCOS and its associated stigma among women and childless couples

A non-governmental organisation, Xoese Ghana is appealing to the government to include the treatment of women’s fertility care on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Xoese Ghana organised a polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) awareness seminar on Wednesday (27 September), at the Christ the King Parish in Accra under the theme: “Polycystic ovarian syndrome: enlightening toward an infertility stigma-free society”.

PCOS is a very common hormone problem for women of childbearing age. PCOS can cause missed or irregular periods, excess hair growth, acne, infertility and weight gain.

Speaking to Asaase News, the director of Xoese Ghana, Emelia Naa Ayeley Aryee highlighted the need for the government’s intervention.

“Beyond information sharing, there’s also the need to seek fertility care,” she said. “We all know how expensive it is to seek fertility care in Ghana, so we would appreciate it, if the government can do something about it.”

“The government will prioritise women’s health and we’re pleading with the government to absorb women’s fertility care on the National Health Insurance Scheme, it will go a long way to help,” Aryee added.

Also touching on the same topic, the medical director of the Tema Women’s Hospital, Dr Yaa Owusu Baah, urged women to seek medical attention when they experience the PCOS symptoms.

“I can say in a week, I probably see about eight to 10 cases of PCOS. It is a very common condition. About 70% of the people worldwide don’t even know they haven’t been diagnosed. So, when you start experiencing symptoms you should come and see your doctor and see what’s going on with you,” Dr Baah said.
