Sports Minister looks to position Ghana as West Africa’s sports hub post-African Games

Mustapha Ussif believes newly built facilities will attract local and foreign sports federations to camp in Ghana and prepare for various competitions

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has outlined Ghana’s ambitious plans to transform into the sports hub of West Africa.

Ussif, who was speaking at a Minister’s Press Briefing on Monday (4 March), stated that with the conclusion of the 13th African Games, Ghana aims to harness its newly erected sports facilities to attract both local and international sports federations for various competitions.

“The expectation is that once we finish these Games, we should use the facilities that we have gotten to drive more traffic for competitions here in Ghana,” stated Minister Ussif.

“That is the plan that we have put together and position Ghana as the sports hub within the West African sub-region.”

“Additionally, infrastructure such as hosting facilities, football pitches, cafeterias, and medical centres will be provided on sight; this will attract local and foreign sports federations to camp in Ghana and prepare for various competitions.” Ussif added.

He reaffirmed President Nana Akufo-Addo’s vision to repurpose the Borteyman Sports Complex into a University for Sports Development post the African Games.

“The vision of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana is to ensure that once we’ve finished, we convert those facilities to a university for sports for development to ensure sustainability and legacy of these Games,” the minister said.
