Robotic competition: Otumfuo Foundation supports Prempeh College with GHC17,500

The competition aims to accelerate the development of new robotics capabilities to solve problems

The Otumfuo Foundation has presented a cheque of GHC17,500 to Prempeh College, as the school’s robotic club prepares seven members to represent Ghana ahead of this year’s robotic competition set to be held at the Lawrence Technology University in Michigan, USA.

The ‘Robofest 2023’ which kicks off on the 11 to 13 May 2023, aims to accelerate the development of new robotics capabilities to solve problems.

The Otumfuo Foundation made the presentation at a brief ceremony on Friday (5 May). The gesture follows a request by the club which forms in line with the Foundation’s social initiative aimed at empowering young people. It is also part of His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s commitment to ensuring that the Ghanaian child becomes competitive among students from any part of the world.

The board chairman of Otumfuo Foundation and Otumfuo’s Hiahene, Prof Nana Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene Il, expressed excitement about the team’s achievements in robotics and their representation of the Asante Nation and Ghana on the international stage.

“There are some things that have to be invented, so as an inventor myself, I am always very pleased when I see kids who also want to be inventors. This is the future; and to join the robotics club and design something that provides Artificial Intelligence, it gives me the pleasure to support them, and my motivation is to help the youth become like me and more.”

“As you go out there to compete, have it at the back of your minds that you represent Asanteman and Ghana in general. You have the support of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, and the entire Ghanaian people to raise the flag of Ghana high”, he advised the contestants.

The assistant headmaster (academic) of Prempeh College James Owusu Achiaw who received the donation on behalf of the students praised the Foundation for the timely intervention and urged other philanthropists to support robotics clubs in second-cycle schools.

“Robotics aid the students to develop and we are in the STEM age, and so if these young boys can do these things, the good thing is if we help them they will go far, and I don’t think only the boys from Prempeh College have this idea, but the cost is high and for us to sustain such initiatives we need support, therefore we plead with all other stakeholders to come to our aid and that of other robotic clubs in other schools to enhance their future and Ghana will be the benefactor.”

The Robotic Club from Premeph College won the Robofest World Championship in 2013, 2016, and 2020. With the Otumfuo Foundation’s support, they are optimistic about their chances in this year’s competition.
