#SafeMotorway4All: The hell in plying the Accra-Tema Motorway

Asaase launches #SafeMotorway4All, a public interest news campaign for a safer Accra-Tema Motorway

Potholes are a common problem on roads in Ghana, but they have become a significant and growing issue on the Accra-Tema Motorway.

The motorway is used by thousands of commuters and motorists daily, but the potholes have caused damage to vehicles, increased the risk of accidents, and created significant delays.

Asaase Radio has, however, kickstarted a public interest campaign to signal the urgency to restore the Accra-Tema motorway to improve safety.

This is the first in a series of news reports by Asaase highlighting the issues plaguing Ghana’s only motorway linking the Volta Region, Tema Metropolis, and Togo by road to the capital, Accra.

Listen to a report by Asaase 99.5 Accra’s reporter Caleb Ahinakwah:

About #SafeMotorway4All Campaign

The Asaase Radio public interest campaign series will spotlight the importance of maintaining critical infrastructure and citizens’ power in bringing about change. The campaign promises to bring critical attention to an issue that affects the lives of many Ghanaians.

The Accra-Tema Motorway is an essential artery for Ghana’s economy, linking the largest port in the country with the capital city.

However, years of neglect and lack of maintenance have left the N1 in a state of disrepair, leading to accidents and traffic congestion.

In line with #SeeSomethingSaySomething and the government’s efforts to urge all Ghanaians to be active “citizens, not spectators”, the #SafeMotorway4All campaign will identify key challenges to the smooth working of the N1 and push for action to address these.

Don’t forget to join the campaign by sharing your experiences, appeals and solutions on social media with the hashtags #SafeMotorway4all.
