Salaga sex abuse: 18 “sodomised” students go through counselling

Natomah Otabel, a teacher, was arrested on 27 September for allegedly sodomising 18 pupils of Kulpi Junior High School

Clinical psychologists have been assigned to offer counselling to the 18 students in the Kulpi Junior High School sex abuse case, who were allegedly sodomised by a teacher in Salaga in the Savannah Region.

The parents of the affected students are also expected to undergo counselling from next week, officials have said.

Speaking to Nana Yaa Mensah on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (28 October), the executive director of Developing Kids Ghana, Moses Yakubu Abdulai, said the counselling could end on Friday.

“I have been able to speak with the boys and to the family also, because … we have organised counselling sessions for them … from Monday up to today and even it will continue till Friday,” he said.

“The organisation will be travelling on Monday to have a competition among schools within that district. So I think if we get there we will have the opportunity to speak to the parents and if possible the whole community.”

He added: “The children were willing to come and they were willing to open up to the counsellors. They have group counselling and one-on-one with the counsellors.”

Background

Natomah Otabel, a teacher at Kulpi Municipal Assembly Junior High School in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region, was arrested by the police on 27 September for allegedly sodomising 18 pupils of the school.

The social studies teacher was arrested following sex abuse complaints by family members of the victims.

Sharing their experiences with the media, one of the victims said the teacher threatened to beat them if they failed to oblige.

“He said if we don’t allow him, he will give us difficult work that we can’t do, then he will get the chance to beat us,” the student claimed.
