Sam George to 4 June demo organisers: Think with your head

The Ningo-Prampram legislator Sam George says no government, irrespective of political persuasion, will allow a demonstration of that sort

The MP for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, has kicked against a planned armed demonstration on 4 June, describing it as “a recipe for disaster.”

The police have blocked the demonstration because it contravenes the public order act.

“The service is of the view that the nature and character of the demonstration as intended, is inconsistent with the public order act,” the police said in a statement. “The service has reached out to the organisers to reconsider their proposal and work with the police towards the organisation of a lawful, peaceful and successful demonstration.”

For his part, the opposition MP, George said no government, irrespective of political persuasion, will allow a demonstration of that sort.

“Armed demonstration? Certainly a recipe for disaster. No government worth its salt in Ghana, irrespective of political party, would allow an armed demonstration. Some times, we ought to think with our heads,” he tweeted.

It’s lawful, says Mensah Thompson

Meanwhile, the executive director for Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) and a member of the #Fixthecountry Movement, Mensah Thompson insists the proposed three-day demonstration is lawful and in line with all laid down rules.

Speaking to Asaase News, he said the police have no case to prevent them from carrying out their right to demonstrate.

“Of course, when people are providing private security they could use registered arms to provide private security. There is nowhere that anybody has said the demonstrators are going to be armed. How are you going to get over 5000 weapons and distribute to demonstrators, is it feasible? Clearly that’s a total misrepresentation,” Thompson said.

“There’s nothing wrong with wanting to address Ghanaians through GBC. It is a national broadcaster, it’s for the people of this country.”
