Stop preaching democracy while practising otherwise – Akufo-Addo tells global powers

President Akufo-Addo says global superpowers should stop campaigning for democracy in debates at the UN Security Council level but acting otherwise, to the detriment of the rest of the world

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has told global superpowers to stop preaching democracy at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) level while they practise otherwise, to the disadvantage of the rest of the world.

Presenting Ghana’s message to the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) from the rostrum of the United Nations in New York City today (Wednesday 20 September 2023), President Akufo-Addo said: “Ghana is currently serving out the second of its two-year terms on the Security Council as a non-permanent member.

“This is the fourth time in the 66 years since we joined the UN, the first postcolonial African country to do so, that we have the privilege to serve on the Council,” the president said.

“It has been a sad and disappointing experience for us. We have witnessed at first hand, over and over again, that the big powers of the United Nations might be preaching democracy, fairness and justice around the world but are happy to practise the opposite here at the United Nations, prioritising parochial interest over those of humanity,” President Akufo-Addo said.

Security Council reform

Akufo-Addo suggested that there is a need for urgent reform of the UN Security Council to deal with this problem. He argued that anything short of reforming the existing Security Council structure will leave Planet Earth and her future in jeopardy.

“The time is long overdue to correct the long-standing injustice that the current structure and composition of the United Nations Security Council represents for the nations of Africa.

“After serving on the Council at this difficult time in the world, our views on the need for reforms have been even more strongly reasserted,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“We cannot continue to preach democracy, equality and good governance around the globe, we cannot insist on peace and justice in the world, when our global organisation is seen by the majority of its members and the people of the world as hampered by an unjust and unfair structure,” the president further said.
