We do not charge AGI members in US dollars at the ports, says GPHA
Members of the Association of Ghana Industries(AGI) who spoke off record to Asaase News claimed that the GPHA’s practice of quoting tariffs in dollars is having an adverse effect on their business and may directly be blamed for the rising cost of living and high inflation in the country
The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has denied claims that its tariffs on imports are pegged in US dollar, adding to the woes of the Ghana cedi.
Members of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) who spoke off record to Asaase News claimed that the GPHA’s practice of quoting tariffs in dollars is having an adverse effect on their businesses and may directly be blamed for the rising cost of living and high inflation in the country.
They have also attributed the continuous depreciation of the cedi against the dollar to the situation.
Speaking to Asaase News, the General manager, marketing and corporate affairs of GPHA, Esther Gyebi-Donkor said: “If you are talking about AGI, I know that they will be more concerned, when it comes to the GPHA, they will be more concerned about our receipts and delivery charges.”
“That is, when they are coming to clear their cargo that they brought, probably raw materials and things that they have brought to the ports, and probably if any of them are exporting, then they will be dealing with the GPHA directly. And those import and export charges are all in cedis. We don’t charge those in dollars,” she said.
The revised tariff was published and took effect on 1 July 2022. Per the fees schedule, importers and exporters under the receipt and delivery – fourth schedule – are charged in cedis and not dollars.
