Ghana has made some significant strides in the latest World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières).
The country moved from 62nd to 50th place in the latest World Press Freedom Index.
This ranking places Ghana well within the top 50% out of the 180 nations included in the index.
Reporters Without Borders acknowledged that Ghana has a vibrant and pluralistic media environment.
This includes such aspects as the media landscape, legal framework, political climate, economy, safety and sociocultural context.
Of the five indicators used to compile the international rankings, it is the political indicator that has shown the steepest decline, registering a global average fall of 7.6 points.
This year’s World Press Freedom Day is on the theme “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis”.
World Press Freedom Day is significant for bringing attention to the significance of press freedom in individual societies.
Its purpose is to guarantee that the general public has access to information and that governments respect the people’s right to free speech.
The day also aims to draw attention to the difficulties that journalists and media organisations all over the world face, such as threats to their personal safety, censorship and violence.
