US to withdraw troops from Niger

American officials are set to initiate discussions on the orderly withdrawal of US forces from Niger

In a significant development in US-Niger relations, American officials are set to initiate discussions on the orderly withdrawal of US forces from Niger.

This decision comes as negotiations continue with the National Council for Safeguarding the Homeland (CNSP). However, they have disagreed on continuing security cooperation.

US ambassador to Niger Kathleen FitzGibbon and Major General Kenneth Ekman, director of Strategy, Engagement and Programs for US Africa Command, are scheduled to meet with CNSP officials in Niamey on Thursday (25 April).

The meetings aim to discuss the withdrawal terms, focusing on transparency and mutual respect.

The following week, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict Christopher Maier and Lieutenant General Dag Anderson, the Director for Joint Force Development, Joint Staff, will lead further talks.

These discussions are set to solidify the plans for the U.S. withdrawal, marking a pivotal moment in the partnership that has notably enhanced regional stability.

Despite the ongoing dialogue since July 2023, the U.S. and CNSP have not reached an understanding that addresses both parties’ concerns about continuing their security cooperation.

Nevertheless, the US remains committed to maintaining strong bilateral relations with Niger, as expressed through the forthcoming visit of Deputy Secretary of State Kurt M. Campbell.
