Vice chancellor: Ghana Institute of Architects has been instrumental to KNUST

Prof Rita Dickson said 10 industry practitioners are currently supporting the teaching of architectural studies at KNUST

The Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Rita Akosua Dickson, has commended members of the Ghana Institute of Architects for their tremendous contributions to (KNUST).

Speaking at the 60th anniversary celebration of the Ghana Institute of Architects on Wednesday (9 November) in Accra, Dickson said 10 industry practitioners are currently supporting the teaching of architectural studies at the department, adding “they are doing that part-time work out of love.”

“In this regard, I am pleased to report that currently 10 industry practitioners are helping with teaching in the Department of Architecture on a part-time basis, and you will agree with me that it is more for the reason of labour of love than anything else considering the menial allowances that they receive at the end of the exercise,” she said.

She said the Ghana Institute of Architects has opened its doors to nurture students by providing them with internship opportunities.

This, she believes, has contributed to the 14 students graduating with honours in architecture this year, which has been unusual in the past.

“Our students also undertake their internship training in the various firms of industry practitioners who are members of the Ghana Institute of Architects. To this we are eternally grateful,” she added.

“I have no doubt that this has contributed in no small measure in what we have realised this academic year in the Department of Architecture, indeed at the time most of you graduated.

“It was very unheard of to have a first class in architecture but I am happy to report this afternoon that 14 students are in the first class zone, college board has recommended them for first class, awaiting academic board to approve same for them to graduate during this 2021/2022 academic year with first class honours in Architecture,” Dickson said.

The vice chancellor also hinted that the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is developing measures to engage industry professionals in academia to advance staffing situations.

“The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is working on a crucial paper to create a more flexible and attractive pathway for the engagement of industry professionals into academia to improve the staffing situation.

“The vice chancellor is very passionate about that paper, and inputs are almost finalised to be presented to the academic board and subsequently to the council.”
