Turnout is low in some districts of the Volta Region in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise as residents call on the Electoral Commission to decentralise the system.
Residents of North Tongu District must cross the Volta Lake in order to access the district office in Bator, the district’s capital raising a lot of reservations from the locals.
“This morning I’ve about 50 people who came to my house that they heard about the registration but they don’t have the means to get to the registration centre,” Ben Kweku, the assemblyman of one of the island communities, told Asaase News.
The MP for the area, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa visited the EC office to monitor the exercise. He lamented bitterly about the EC’s decision not to decentralise the exercise.
He described the EC boss, Jean Mensa as “very autocratic, very undemocratic, no consultation or so ever and she’s going ahead.”
“She does not care what the political parties and key stakes are saying,” Ablakwa added.
According to him, the EC is adopting tactics to disenfranchise the masses.
In North Tongu, the MP said he will do whatever he can to make sure that his constituents are not left out in the registration.
He has provided life jackets and canoes for residents to encourage them to cross the lake in order to go through the registration.
