Unite America, Akufo-Addo urges US President-Elect Joe Biden

President Akufo-Addo congratulates Joe Biden after his victory in the US presidential election and calls on him to make unity a priority

Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, has congratulated President-Elect Joe Biden of the United States and expressed the hope that his tenure will be “marked by the delivery of unity”.

Following a resounding victory over the incumbent, Donald Trump, the Democrat will be inaugurated as the 46th president in January 2021.

In a statement, Akufo-Addo said he is looking forward to a fruitful working relationship with Biden, aimed at strengthening the ties between Ghana and the US.

Akufo-Addo and Biden

“I am hopeful that, over the course of his presidency, relations between Ghana and the United States of America will continue to grow from strength to strength, relations which have, over the years, been based on a shared agenda of freedom, development, progress and prosperity,” the Ghanaian leader said.

“It is my sincere hope that President-Elect Biden’s tenure of office will be marked by the delivery of unity, security, progress and prosperity to all Americans,” he added.

“Warm congratulations, once again, to President-Elect Joe Biden, Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris, and the people of the United States of America. God bless the American people, and best wishes for their country’s continued success.”

Expectant world

Meanwhile, Ghana’s former president Jerry John Rawlings has also tweeted, saying the world is expectant as a “new era of United States leadership dawns”.

He also called on Biden to make unity a priority.

Cliffhanger vote count

Biden won the race to become the next US president, defeating Trump after a cliffhanger vote count that followed Tuesday’s election.

The BBC projects that Biden has won the key battleground of Pennsylvania, propelling him over the 270 electoral college vote threshold required to clinch the White House. The Trump campaign has indicated its candidate does not plan to concede.

The result makes Trump the first one-term president since the 1990s.

The BBC’s projection of Biden’s victory is based on unofficial results from states that have already finished counting their votes, and the expected results from states such as Wisconsin where the count is continuing.

The election produced the highest turnout since 1900. Biden has won more than 73 million votes so far, the most ever for a US presidential candidate. Trump has drawn almost 70 million, the second-highest tally in history.

President Trump had falsely declared himself the winner of the election while vote counting was far from finished. He has since alleged irregularities in counting, but has not presented any evidence of electoral fraud.

His campaign has filed a barrage of lawsuits in various states. And on Friday, as Biden appeared to be on the cusp of victory, Trump said: “This election is not over.”
