GEPA CEO: We have to deliberately develop the apparel industry

The chief executive of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) says that the government and businesspeople can do a lot to grow exports of made-in-Ghana goods with textiles and clothing

Dr Afua Asabea Asare, the chief executive officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), has said there must be a deliberate effort to develop the apparel and textile industries.

She said more must be done to grow Ghana’s major players in the apparel industry to accrue more benefits for the country, adding: “We haven’t scratched the surface of what we can do in the apparel industry.”

Speaking with Nana Yaa Mensah for Sunday Night, Dr Asare said, “I think that there should be a deliberate effort; we should be intentional about grooming and growing these industries [apparel, textiles and clothing] to mop up all the seamstresses and the tailors who have little shops around.

National Export Strategy

“We can put all of these people together and train them effectively to work with the bigger industry to push the clothing and apparel industry to where it’s supposed to be. There is a lot that we can do in that industry.”

She said: “Per our National Export Strategy document, we have 17 priority areas that GEPA is currently developing. We are recently developing services.

“So when you talk about education, health and tourism, it’s all part of the services that we’re taking out there to sell.”
