Wiyaala: I’ll never forget my roots

The popular Ghanaian artiste says she will always stay true to herself and her tribe despite the fame she is enjoying globally

  • "I decided to stick to what God gave me, it was difficult, it wasn’t sexy enough for some people, some people even tried to convince me to close the gap between my teeth because it wasn't sellable, but I just kept going."

Ghanaian Afro-pop singer Wiyaala has said breaking the bias and staying true to herself and tribe was the key factor in her journey to fame.

“I am happy that I have been able to stay true to myself,” the Sun and Moon hitmaker said on Asaase Radio’s Accra-Lagos-Joburg weekend entertainment show.

“I have travelled around the world but when I go back to my community, I am the same person. I haven’t changed, the only thing that changed is that I’m popular now and I’m on TV,” Wiyaala said.

Talking to Solomon Ter on Asaase Radio on Saturday (12 March), the singer said setting an example for young girls in her community is important to her.

“I’m making sure to represent Sissala very well. This is how all the Sissala girls look like, they look like me so I have no intentions of changing who I am. If I go out and bleach my skin, the young ones will be confused.”

“Just be yourself, if you are naturally light skin, it’s beautiful, stay true to that, your hair is your beauty as well, you can’t start playing with your skin colour because that’s your identity.

“I decided to stick to what God gave me, it was difficult, it wasn’t sexy enough for some people, some people even tried to convince me to close the gap between my teeth because it wasn’t sellable, but I just kept going,” the Rock my body singer revealed.

Relationship

On relationship, Wiyaala said that although she has a partner she is not yet married.

“I’m just honest with my situation so I don’t cause problems for myself. What I want to say is that I have someone in my life, but I’m yet to get married. That is why I don’t want to put a label on it, I am engaged although unofficially.

“My marriage is complicated, until he comes to do traditional wedding, I am just married on paper, I am not his wife yet. If I say I’m married my people will start coming after, to ask who my husband is,” the 35-year-old award-winning artiste said.
