We’ve not printed GHC22 billion for government, says BoG

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has been responding to allegations that it printed new money worth billions of cedis to support the government to roll out the 2022 Budget

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has refuted claims that it printed GHC22.04 billion worth of new money for the government.

The allegation was first made by the ranking member of the finance committee of Parliament, Cassiel Ato Forson, after the Minister for Finance presented the 2022 Mid-Year Budget Review.

Forson alleged that the central bank had printed the amount of GHC22.04 billion to finance the government’s Budget without approval from Parliament.

But in a statement, the Bank of Ghana said: “The amount of GHC22.04 billion represents net claims on government, and not new currency printed to support the government’s budget.”
