Yaw Oppong to new SRC executives: Become professional lawyers with integrity

This, he said, will help them to complete their law course successfully and become responsible people in society

Yaw Oppong, the director of the Ghana School of Law, has urged the newly sworn-in executives of the Students Representative Council (SRC) to aspire to become professionals with integrity.

This, he said, will help them to complete their law course successfully and become responsible people in society.

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony for the SRC at the Ghana School of Law in Makola, Oppong said: “It is in the code of ethics of this school, that no student shall exhibit disrespectful conduct to a staff, disrespectful conduct and behavior towards any staff of the school nor to one another.”

“Be reminded that good character is equally important. As important as the academic performance and that will follow you up to the day your certificate is issued with your name centered to the role of lawyers and beyond even more seriously when you become a lawyer,” he said.

Oppong said that about 850 final-year law students will soon be called to the Ghana Bar, provided they meet other requirements such as proof of good character. Oppong said the candidates will be considered for the Bar on the basis of not only academic performance, but also their conduct throughout their stay on campus.

The candidates who passed the exams after meeting the last requirement shall be called to the bar on Friday 12 November 2022.

New executives

The new president of the SRC Odupong Agyapong Atta-Agyapong gave assurance to the students that the Law School village will provide more access.

He also said his tenure will see an improved scholarship scheme.

“Indeed as flamboyant as law students may be, there are many of us as director said who struggle to pay school fees. Therefore, as part of our welfare scheme for members, we will design a new and improved SRC scholarship committee with an expanded threshold and with the hope that congress pass it into law.

“We dream of the day that the law village will be completed for all law students to be on the same campus. Where students will walk five minutes from their hostels to the classrooms. Where classrooms will be fitted with the appropriate and effective infrastructure.,” he said.
