NDC women demonstrate in Kumasi over “flawed” election results

The demonstration forms part of a series of protests by the NDC over what it describes as flawed elections

The Women’s Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday embarked on a demonstration over what they described as flawed Election 2020 results.

The demonstration forms part of nationwide protests by the opposition NDC following the rejection of the 7 December presidential and parliamentary elections by its Flagbearer, John Mahama.

Led by the National Women Organizer of the party, Hannah Bissiw, the supporters, most of them clad in red attire marched to the regional office of the Electoral Commission to register their displeasure at the outcome of the elections.

The Declaration

The chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, on Wednesday 9 December declared Akufo-Addo the winner of the 2020 presidential elections, after defeating John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress.

Akufo-Addo won by 51.59% of the total votes cast as against Mahama’s 6,214,889 representing 47.36%. Akufo-Addo polled a total of 6,70,413 votes out of the total votes of 13,119,460.

However, the minority NDC has since rejected the 2020 results, describing the election as full of irregularities in some parts of the country.

Mahama last week revealed the party will explore all legal avenues available to overturn the flawed elections.

Redress

Meanwhile, the MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, says the NDC will soon be in court to seek to overturn the 7 December election results in its favour.

“Sooner or later NDC would be in court,” Fuseini said.

“Well, we have proof. Clearly, the NDC is collating the evidence and we want to present an iron-clad case in court and the evidence that we will provide to the court will be unassailable. These are early days yet. We are working within the mandate of the law or the provision of the law which requires that you go to court within a certain time,” he told Beatrice Adu on the Big Bulletin on Asaase Radio.

Time constraints

Fuseini said the NDC is mindful of time limitation with regards to the filing of its case in court and would do that in confines of the law.

He said, “Well, the party will do that [go to court] within the confines of the law within the time frame provided by law and so we are mindful of the fact that if we don’t take action before the expiration of the time-limited by law to go to court, we will be out of time so we will do that within the ambit of the law…”

“When you go to court to show that the elections could not have been the manifestation of the will of the people, you will have to demonstrate the Electoral Commission did not or could not have said to have carried out their functions in a way that manifested or reflected the will of the people and in doing so if that could be interpreted to mean impugning the integrity of the Commission so be it,” Inusah Fuseini said.

He added, “We have to demonstrate that if the EC were minded to carry out its mandate in a fair, impartial and neutral manner the results could not have been declared what was declared.”
