Abu Sakara: One term of six years enough for presidency

The founder of National Interest Movement (NIM) says the four-year tenure is not enough to ensure long-term planning for development

Dr Abu Sakara Foster, the founder of the National Interest Movement (NIM) has reiterated the need for Ghana to review its constitution for national presidents to have six years per term.

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s Townhall Talk show on Friday (8 April), the former presidential candidate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) said the current four-year tenure is not enough to ensure long-term planning for development.

“I believe that our electoral cycle is too short… six years a term will be good for our development and will force the parties to think in the medium to long-term and not just the short term,” Dr Foster told show host Kofi Abotsi.

“My argument has always been that, whether you are in power or not you must be allowed to take direct part in governance, contribute, and not just be a bit part because of political affiliations,” he said.

“If our political parties continue to be consumed by the idea of coming into power and nothing else… then development is a long while away.”

Building consensus

The agronomist said political parties must learn to build consensus to help fast track the country’s development.

“The National Interest Movement which I belong to seeks to ensure that the fundamental issues that are stopping us from making medium to long-term decisions are rectified.

“Until our political parties allow consensus while understanding at the back of their minds that one day power will turn hands… our development will be all over the place as is now,” the 63-year-old said.
