Achuliwor: Family holds memorial service for late former Navrongo MP

The family of the late John Setuni Achuliwor, a former Member of Parliament for Navrongo, has observed the 20th anniversary of his passing with a memorial service.

The solemn service, which coincided with the 70th birthday of the late statesman, was held at his family residence in Navrongo on Sunday (March 19)

It was attended by current and former government appointees, chiefs, the clergy, members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), friends and well-wishers who jointly prayed for the continuous rest of the late stateman and his family.

John Setuni Achuliwor was the first New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for the Navrongo central constituency between 2000-2003 before he passing on January 2003 in a deadly road crash. Achuliwor was heading to Bolga for a regional executive meeting on conflict resolution when the accident happened.

Before joining the New Patriotic Party, John Achuliwor became Member of Parliament for the area as an independent candidate between 1994-1996.

Alhaji Abdallah Otito Achuliwor, younger brother of the late MP and head of the family, addressing the gathering said the loss of John Achuliwor has created a void in the family which was yet to be filled.

He said during John Achuliwor’s earthly days, he taught the family values of perseverance, fearlessness and truthfulness, which the family to date hold firmly to. Alhaji Otito continued that John Achuliwor’s adherence to societal values and commitment to the cause of humanity are what he is remembered for.

Alhaji Otito, who aspire to fill the shoes of John Achuliwor’s political life, said the family will continue to preserve his legacy and memories. This, he hinted the family will do through a number of initiatives including donation of books to basic schools, erections of monuments within the Navrongo township, among others.

He said, “We want to keep his legacy. We are going to construct bus stops in town and label them in his honour. We also intent to support school children with branded exercise books for them to remember that he was an educationist and he stood for the education of the people of this constituency”.

Ghana’s ambassador to Burkina Faso, Boniface Gambilla, in a speech described the late statesman as an exemplary leader whose life the people of Navrongo should learn from.

Gambilla said John Achuliwor during his life impacted positively the lives of people and the development of Navrongo and region. He, therefore, added voice to calls for the preservation of the legacy and memories of John Achuliwor.

He shared beautiful memories he had with John Achuliwor and assured to continuously keep touch with the Achuliwor family.

“I had a very close relation with Setuni. So, when the family gave me the invitation to this ceremony, I didn’t see Ouagadougou to be too far for me not to come here. For me, the legacy of Mr Setuni has to continue and people should learn from his life,” Gambilla said.
