Former president John Mahama in his speech delivered to an audience at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA), on Thursday 27 October 2022, is said to have plagiarised an American playwright, screenwriter and film director, Aaron Benjamin Sorkin.
In a post on Facebook after Mahama’s address, social media influencer, Prince Living, also known as “Bazomdunia”, posted a line in the speech which he says is a popular quote of Sorkin but Mahama claimed as his own.
“Plagiarism from Mahama’s speech. Page 38 of Mahama’s speech. My brothers and sisters, throughout our history, Ghana’s darkest days have always been followed by its finest hours,” Prince Living wrote on his Facebook wall.
The quote of Aaron Benjamin Sorkin, which was also posted by Prince Living alongside his reference to Mahama’s quote read as follows;
“Throughout our history, America’s darkest days have always been followed by its finest hours”.
Nii Tetteh, on Twitter also said; “Mahama has no ideas. Even in a speech to provide alternatives he plagiarised. He has exposed how empty he is”.

“If Akufo-Addo wey he do ah like you go talk but you too you dey plagiarise. You thought we won’t notice this plagiarism, Koo Mahama,” Adwoa Konadu also said on her Twitter handle.
Asaase News cross-checking of the 39-page statement of Mahama shows that he indeed referred to the quote of Aaron Sorkin.

“My brothers and sisters, throughout our history, Ghana’s darkest days have always been followed by its finest hours. We always mobilise when all hope seems lost.
“We always come together when nobody gives us a chance anymore. We always turn things around for the better; regardless of how grim the situation is,” Mahama said in his speech.
