Agyeman-Duah: Failure to reach consensus in Parliament is a threat to development

The former UN senior governance advisor Baffour Agyeman-Duah wants the two parties with representation in Parliament to give top priority to matters of national interest rather than politics

The political analyst Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah has said the continuous failure by the two big political parties to reach consensus on matters of critical national interest poses a huge threat to national development.

His comment follows Parliament’s passage into law of the Electronic Transaction Levy Bill (popularly known as the E-Levy) after deferred and protracted debate.

“How do we progress as a nation if the dominant political parties cannot agree on consensus to help work towards the achievement of a national development goal?” said Agyeman-Duah, speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (31 March 2022).

“Most of the problems we face as a country cannot be solved in the short term, but the politician won’t tell you that because they fear that if they do, then they are likely to lose elections,” he told the host of The ABS, Kwaku Nhyira-Addo.

Beyond black and white

“The inordinate quest to achieve power while intentionally ignoring the good works of the other party is a big issue. How do we progress as a nation if the dominant political parties cannot agree on consensus to help work towards the achievement of a national development goal?”

The former UN senior governance advisor advised both parties to stop rubbishing each other’s projects and policies while in opposition.

“After all, how can you come into power and continue the good works of the other party when, as opposition, you had painted everything they did black? All our political parties are guilty of this!” Agyeman-Duah said.
