President Akufo-Addo, has charged Ghana's Ambassador to Japan, Mrs. Geneviève Edna Apaloo, to promote Ghana's relations with Japan

President Akufo-Addo, has charged newly commissioned Ghanaian Ambassador to Japan, Mrs. Geneviève Edna Apaloo, to make the promotion of Ghana’s relations with Japan her topmost priority during her tour of duty.

Mrs. Geneviève Edna Apaloo, until her new appointment, was the acting Head of Mission of the Embassy of Ghana in Washington DC, United States of America, where she was posted as Head of Chancery in October 2019.

Addressing the newly sworn-in career Ambassador at the Jubilee House today 26th January 2022 after administering the official oath, oath of secrecy, and of allegiance to her, President Akufo-Addo said he had no doubt that with the level of experience at the disposal of Ambassador Mrs Apaloo, she will be an effective representative of Ghana in Japan.

Ghana-Japan Relations

According to President Akufo-Addo, “Japan is a very good friend of our country [Ghana] and Japan has been a very faithful, dependable ally of Ghana ever since the beginning of our independence.” On this wise, he stressed that every necessary step had to be taken to protect the strong ties of friendship between Ghana and Japan.

“The Council of State had no difficulty in accepting my nomination of you and the Japanese government has also given its [approval] to your coming there as our Ambassador to the government and people of Japan,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“The most important thing is that you are there to promote the relationship between us and them. I am very confident that you will be able to do so,” President Akufo-Addo added.

Ambassador’s Response

Ambassador Geneviève Edna Apaloo, in her response expressed her gratitude for the confidence the President, and by extension, the state had placed in her.

She assured the President that she will invest all her strength and knowledge into the work ahead of her in order to “bring as much benefit to Ghana” as she can.

Profile of Ambassador Mrs. Apaloo

From September 2017 until October 2019, Mrs. Apaloo was the Director of the Asia and Pacific Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the Republic of Ghana.

As part of her work, she initiated and facilitated the implementation of Ghana’s Foreign Policy vis-à-vis the Asian Pacific Region, including key state and official visits by the President of the Republic to the region.

Prior to that, Mrs. Apaloo was the Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Ghana in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, from September 2016 to October 2017, during which period she served as the Acting Head of Mission from October 2016 to August 2017.

Ambassador Apaloo also served as Minister in the High Commission of Ghana to the Federal Republic of Nigeria from September 2013 to September 2016; Minister-Counsellor, Embassy of Ghana in Lomé, Togo (2007-2011) and First Secretary, Embassy of Ghana in Paris, France (2000-2004).

As a Foreign Service Officer with over 24 years experience, Mrs. Apaloo has worked in various bureaux of the Ministry, namely: the Americas, Multilateral, Africa & AU, Europe, Information & Culture, Protocol and Estates & General Services bureaux.

Mrs. Apaloo holds a Bachelor’s Degree in modern languages, with combined honors in French & Spanish from the University of Ghana, Legon (1992), and an MA in International Affairs from the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy, University of Ghana, (1994).

She has also undertaken a number of professional trainings in various areas of international affairs including: Peace and Stability in West Africa and the Sahel (Netherlands), European Training Programme on Security Policy (Geneva, Switzerland) and Negotiations for Peace Operations (Accra, Ghana).

Mrs. Apaloo’s interests are many and varied, including such areas as governance, international relations, negotiations, regional integration and mentoring of the youth.
