Akufo-Addo: We’re expecting 300,000 doses of Sputnik V vaccines soon

Ghana has already taken delivery of 350,000 more AstraZeneca vaccines from the Democratic Republic of Congo through the COVAX initiative

President Akufo-Addo says the government is expecting an additional 300, 000 doses of Sputnik V vaccines to arrive in the country.

Delivering his 25th address to the nation on measures the government is taking to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, he said, “We are expecting an additional 300,000 doses of Sputnik V vaccines, which have already been approved by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), to arrive in the country.

“As and when we make further progress in the acquisition of vaccines, the Ministries of Health and Information will make this known to you. We are making all efforts to achieve our overall vaccination target.”

Ghana has already taken delivery of 350,000 more AstraZeneca vaccines from the Democratic Republic of Congo through the COVAX initiative.

The vaccines form part of 1.3 million doses out of the 1.7 million doses being redistributed by the United Nations children’s agency UNICEF to Ghana, Comoros, Senegal and Angola.

The arrival of the vaccines in Ghana is expected to boost the government’s drive to administer the second jab to those who had already taken the first shot.

“Plenty of time to travel”

President Akufo-Addo also reiterated the call by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the Ghana Health Service, for Ghanaians to cancel or postponed all non-essential trips to countries with high COVID-19 infection rates, adding, “there will be plenty of time, God-willing, for such trips in the future. We will continue to review our travel restriction measures.”
