Amoako-Atta: Government to complete 6,000 kilometres of roads

The Minister of Roads, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, says that the government is going to prioritise the construction of cocoa, town and critical roads this year

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, has disclosed that 6,000 out of 11,000 kilometres of road are to be completed under the government’s second Year of Roads programme.

His update comes after 4,000 kilometres of road were built in the first term of the Akufo-Addo government.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Sunday 23 May 2021, Amoako-Atta said that the 6,000 kilometres of road to be completed fall under critical, cocoa, town roads and asphalt overlay programmes and the Sinohydro Master Project Support Facility.

On the Critical Roads programme, the minister said some of the roads to be completed are Navrongo-to-Naga stretch, the Wa-to-Bulenga-to-Yaala road, Salaga to Ekumdipe to Kpandai, which is 60% complete, upgrading of the road between Yagaba and Mankarigu, as well as the upgrading of Daboya-to-Mankarigu road among a host of projects.

Cocoa roads

“As part of the government’s Year of Roads programme, 81 critical roads of total length of 2,167.2 kilometres were identified in all the 16 regions for rehabilitation at a cost of GHC7.827 billion,” Amoako-Atta said.

Under the cocoa roads programme, the minister said 325 projects are ongoing in cocoa- growing areas across Ghana. He reported that 4,853 kilometres of roads are being constructed under this programme, at a cost of GHC14.511 billion.

He said these include the Aboabo-to-Esikuma-to-Dunkwa road, Have-to-Hohoe, the Sefwi Wiawso-to-Akontobra stretch, the Dodokorpe-to-BoraeJunction road and Hohoe-to-Jasikan road among other projects.

Amoako-Atta said 563.3 kilometres of roads are to be completed under the town roads programme at a total cost of GHC1.083 billion. The projects include rehabilitation of Gambaga, Nalerigu and Walewale town roads as well as phase one of the upgrading of Prestea and Tepa town roads.

Asphalt overlays

Touching on the asphalt overlay programme, Amoako-Atta said, “The Ministry of Roads and Highways has programmed to undertake 1,500 kilometres of asphaltic overlay in major towns and cities across the country, including [access to] hospitals, schools, courts, police barracks, army garrisons and other security service compounds.”

He said 1,301 kilometres of roads will be completed under this programme in towns such as Obuasi, Kumasi, Akwatia, Oda, Winneba, Swedru and Berekum at a cost of GHC1.665 billion. By the end of this government, he said, 3,000 kilometres of road would have been completed.

Of the Sinohydro Master Project Support Facility, Amoako-Atta said four road projects are ongoing, including two interchanges. The projects, he said, are the Accra inner-city roads, Kumasi inner-city roads, dualisation of the Adenta-to-Dodowa road and rehabilitation of the Ajumako-to-Afransie road.
