Article: Where is Alban Bagbin?

Parliament, under Alban Bagbin’s leadership, has failed to approve President Akufo-Addo's new ministers and deputy ministers

The conspicuous absence of the Speaker of Parliament, Hon Alban Bagbin, has plunged the Ghanaian Parliament into a state of uncertainty and dysfunction, raising serious concerns about his commitment to serving the interests of the Ghanaian people above partisan politics.

With the conclusion of the last session of Parliament pending, crucial legislative business remains unresolved, leaving the nation in limbo. Most notably, Parliament, under Hon Alban Bagbin’s leadership, has failed to approve President Akufo-Addo’s Ministers and Deputy Ministers, blatantly disregarding the latest ruling by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court’s ruling emphasized the Speaker’s constitutional obligation to facilitate the approval process for the President’s nominees, highlighting the critical role of Parliament in ensuring the smooth functioning of government and the implementation of key policies and programmes.

However, Hon Alban Bagbin’s refusal to fulfill this duty, seemingly at the behest of his mother party, the NDC, raises serious questions about his impartiality and dedication to upholding the principles of democracy. By allowing partisan interests to override the national interest, the Speaker has betrayed the trust of the Ghanaian people who elected him to represent their interests in Parliament.

It is imperative that Hon Alban Bagbin immediately prioritizes the welfare of the nation above party politics and returns to his duties as Speaker of Parliament. The Ghanaian people deserve leadership that is committed to advancing their collective interests and ensuring the effective functioning of democratic institutions.

Furthermore, the Speaker needs to desist from doing the bidding of any particular political party and instead uphold the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability that are fundamental to the democratic process. By putting Ghana first, Hon Alban Bagbin can demonstrate his true commitment to serving the interests of all Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliation.

In light of these developments, there is an urgent call for the Speaker of Parliament to heed the voices of the Ghanaian people, prioritize national interest over partisan politics, and fulfill his constitutional obligations without further delay. The future of Ghana’s democracy depends on it.
