Ashanti NPP primaries: 128 aspirants vie for seats, notable incumbents bow out [Full list]

The upcoming primaries, scheduled for 27 January 2024, promise intense competition, with several prominent figures vying for seats

A total of 128 parliamentary aspirants from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have officially submitted their nomination forms to compete in 41 constituencies within the Ashanti Region, where sitting MPs are present.

Notably, five of these candidates are running unopposed in their respective constituencies. The upcoming primaries, scheduled for 27 January 2024, promise intense competition, with several prominent figures vying for seats.

The Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh is set to face two challengers in the Manhyia South Constituency, while Akwasi Konadu contends with former MP Collins Owusu Amankwah and Richard Osei Bamfo for the Manhyia North slot.

Asokore Mampong MCE Kennedy Kwasi Kankam seeks to unseat Deputy Trades Minister Stephen Amoah in the Nhyiaeso Constituency.

At least nine incumbent MPs, including Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Suame) and First Deputy Speaker Joe Osei Owusu (Bekwai), have opted not to seek re-election. The reasons behind their decisions remain unclear, sparking speculation about potential retirements or pursuit of alternative professional opportunities.

The aspirants face a vetting committee on 3 January 2024.
