Ashanti Region: 13 die in Ohene Nkwanta car crash

A head-on collision at Ohene Nkwanta on Sunday evening left 13 passengers – nine males and four females – dead on the spot

At least 13 passengers died on the spot on Sunday when an OA bus and a cargo truck collided at Ohene Nkwanta near Konongo in the Ashanti Region, the police have confirmed.

Speaking with Wilberforce Asare on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (4 October), the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) commander in Konongo, Deputy Superintendent of Police Stephen Paa Yeboah, said 11 other passengers who also sustained injuries are receiving medical attention at the Konongo Government Hospital.

“Yesterday, around 10.50pm, we received information that there was an accident at Duayaw Nkwanta on the Konongo-Accra-Kumasi highway. We proceeded to the scene and found an OA bus and a cargo truck loaded with goods from Kumasi to Accra.

“[As to] the cause of the accident, the information gathered is that the cargo truck, as it was coming from Kumasi, saw a truck ahead of him, and he avoided it and veered into the other lane and crashed with the OA bus, causing the accident [in] which 13 people perished on the spot,” he said.

DSP Yeboah appealed to the government to erect speed ramps on that stretch of the highway to reduce the spate of accidents in the area.

Statistics from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) show that over 1,000 people have been killed in road accidents across the country this year alone.
