Ashanti Region: Joint team shuts down Achievers Pharmacy in Konongo for operating illegally

This is the second time the facility has been closed down with a previous branch in Obuasi facing a similar fate in 2023

A joint operation by the Pharmacy Council in the Ashanti Region and the police led to the closure of Achievers Pharmacy’s Konongo branch on Friday, 2 February 2024.

This is the second time the facility has been closed down with a previous branch in Obuasi facing a similar fate in 2023.

Officials from the Pharmacy Council emphasised the pharmacy’s illegal operations and raised concerns about public safety.

Benjamin Kwarteng Frimpong, the Ashanti regional director at the Pharmacy Council, stated, “Per our books and records, that facility was not registered. So we put things together and visited the premises officially as part of our investigations. So, with the assistance of the police, we realized that the facility was operating without a valid license.”

He continued, “Also, we discovered that unauthorized persons were selling restricted drugs without appropriate inventory, and we realized that the facility is a threat to public safety and so we had to shut it down.”

In 2023, the Pharmacy Council had already closed over 100 pharmaceutical shops in Ghana between September and November for operating illegally and prescribing the wrong medications. Kwarteng Frimpong asserted that the council is committed to enforcing its laws and will continue to take action against pharmacies that do not comply.

‘We are warning operators of pharmaceutical facilities that are not duly registered or operating with expired licenses that we are coming hard on them this year because we have to guarantee public safety, and once you have decided to be part of this industry, you have to abide by the rules and regulations,’ he stated.”
