Akatsi police intercept vehicle loaded with marijuana

The police say the minibus carrying the packs of marijuana was moving from Ziope through Akatsi to the Tadzewu area of the Volta Region when it was tracked down

Police in Akatsi, in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region, have intercepted a vehicle carrying large quantities of dry leaves suspected to be marijuana.

The vehicle, a Hyundai commercial minibus with the registration number AW 3121-Z, was chased and intercepted at Netikope, near the Dzodze-Tadzewu barrier in the Ketu North Municipality of the region.

Chief Superintendent of Police Joseph Atsu Dzineku, the Akatsi South municipal police commander, said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency that the bus was intercepted at about 12.10am on Wednesday (13 January) after officers decided to act on intelligence.

“The vehicle was moving from Ziope through Akatsi to Tadzewu area when my men tracked down on the bus,” he said.

Still on the case

CSP Dzineku further said that the driver, the only occupant of the bus, suspecting that he was being followed, sped off and abandoned the fully loaded vehicle at Netikope, near the Dzodze-Tadzewu barrier.

The tightly compressed, dried leaves were concealed in 16 large compartments of various sizes.

CSP Dzineku announced that personnel from the Narcotics Control Unit of the Police Service in Ho would take control of the case and will open and conduct further investigations into the matter.

No arrest has been effected and the driver of the vehicle is still at large.
