Prejudicial killings by the police must stop, says Nkoranza MP

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Emmanuel Agyekum said the people of Nkoranza deserve better after losing two people in different circumstances

The MP for Nkoranza South, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, has condemned the police over the recent disturbances in the area following the alleged killing of Daniel Donkor by some cops.

One person died in the clash between the police and the youth of Nkoranza on Tuesday (17 May) over the death of Donkor, an armed robbery suspect who died during a police anti-robbery operation.

Five others who sustained injuries during the clash are currently on admission at a medical centre, the police said in a statement.

The youth blocked sections of the main road, burnt car tyres on the streets of Nkoranza and attacked the divisional police headquarters, prompting the police to fire warning shots to restore law and order.

Nkoranza deserves better

Speaking to the media on Thursday, the MP said the people of Nkoranza deserve better.

“Something needs to be done,” Agyekum said. “This killings and prejudicial killings, the police brutality must stop and it has to stop here.”

“We need to champion this. If you are a Ghanaian, this is the time to champion that police brutality must stop because it can happen to anyone, we can’t just leave them to be killing people and move around and defend themselves,” he said.

He reiterated his earlier call for an independent probe into the deaths in Nkoranza.

“People are calling for justice for Victor, the same justice that people were asking for George Floyd, we need justice for Victor. And I have been saying that, if we leave this investigation with the police, it will be the same old story,” Agyekum said.
