Bawumia and Akufo-Addo always work hand in hand, says Jantuah

Speaking on the Forum on Saturday (10 February) Jantuah stated his belief that at least the president consulted Bawumia on several policies as they act together as a collective

Private legal practitioner Kwame Jantuah has added his voice to the recent debate about the role of the Vice-President following comments made by New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia that, as Vice President in the Nana Akufo-Addo government, he is more of a driver’s mate.

Speaking on The Forum on Saturday (10 February) Jantuah stated his belief that at least the President consulted Bawumia on several policies as they act together as a collective.

“The president is the president, and the vice-president is the vice-president. The missing word in there is collective; they act together as a collective. If you look at the cabinet, the president doesn’t know everything.”

“That’s why he has people who have expertise in different disciplines come sit down and discuss the issues. And once they discuss the issues and put everything forward, the president can decide to call the vice-president to have a one-on-one with him.”

“It’s like a pilot in a plane. He has a co-pilot. When the pilot is tired, he [co-pilot] takes over. They sit and they communicate.”

“So in this bit where we are trying to say the vice-president is the president, I don’t see it. They work together. That’s why the vice-president can’t jump, because the vice-president has his responsibilities.”

Jantuah, however, stated that the question we should be asking is if, after consulting the vice-president, the president acted upon his advice.

“The question is when the president takes a decision. Does he consult the vice-president? If he doesn’t consult the vice-president, then maybe.”

“But I’m sure he will consult the vice-president. The vice-president will know everything. That is why some of the things Bawumia said – you know, it’s like groundnuts with a rotting one inside.”
