Black Meteors technical team dissolved

The mandate of the Black Meteors technical team came to an end as soon as they were eliminated on the U-23 AFCON

Following their elimination from the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the coaching staff of the Black Meteors, head coach Ibrahim Tanko, and assistant coaches Godwin Attram and Michael Osei, have been relieved of their duties with the team.

Tanko, who previously led the team four years ago, was tasked with the objective of securing a top-three finish in the 2023 edition of AFCON to qualify for the next Olympic Games.

However, the team fell short once again and failed to progress beyond the group stage after a draw in their final group match against Guinea.

In an interview with 3Sports on Sports Ultras, Frederick Acheampong, the Chairman of the Management Committee of the team, stated that their mandate came to an end as soon as they were eliminated on Friday.

He explained that the technical team, as well as the players and officials, are no longer recognized in their roles. The decision regarding their future involvement will be made by the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council.

Acheampong emphasised that the team was assembled with the specific goal of qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, and since they failed to achieve this, the team will be dissolved. He clarified that the power to appoint a new coach or decide on the continuation of the current coaching staff lies with the Executive Council.

“This team was put together for the purpose of qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and we failed to qualify so obviously, it will be dissolved,” he told 3Sports.

“If it happens that Executive Council will discuss and consider another appointment or want the coach to continue, that will be in the powers of the Executive Council. I am not in the position to say whether they will continue or not because I don’t make the appointment in terms of the national teams. It is the decision of the Executive Council.

“The team stands dissolved because we failed to qualify for the Olympic Games and we don’t have any tournaments coming up next year,” he added.

With their exit from the tournament, Ghana’s hope of returning to the Olympic Games, after their last appearance in 2004, will have to wait for at least another four years.
