Dakoa Newman: 15-year-old Naa Okromo to be reunited with parents

Authorities have determined that releasing Naa Okromo to her parents aligns with the best interests of the child, as outlined in Sections 2 and 5 of the Children's Act

Naa Okromo, the 15-year-old girl at the centre of a “marriage” controversy, has been released to her parents on Thursday (18 April). Dakoa Newman, Minister-designate for Gender, Children, and Social Protection has said.

Following an interim report issued by the Attorney General, authorities determined that releasing Naa Okromo to her parents aligns with the best interests of the child, as outlined in Sections 2 and 5 of the Children’s Act. The release is contingent upon the parents signing a bond.

“The Attorney General has issued an interim report, which is dated 18th April 2024, and has advised that, in the best interest of the child and in accordance with Sections 2 and 5 of the Children’s Act, the child should be released to her parents pending their complete review of the docket. Thus, the child will be reunited with her family today 18th April, 2024 after the parents have signed the bond,” said Newman.

The Minister Designate for Gender, Children, and Social Protection also confirmed Naa Okromo’s age as 15 years old, based on records from her crèche and primary schools. She also revealed that the Ministry of Gender’s social welfare department has provided Naa Okromo with counselling and medical assessments. Caregivers and counselors have also discussed her education, health, and future prospects with Naa Okromo and her family.

“Naa Okromo’s date of birth from records at her crèche and her primary schools she attended indicates that she is 15 years old and she was born on the 18 July, 2008,” Newman said.

“The social welfare department under the Ministry of Gender has taken the child through counselling. The required medical assessment have also been undertaken. The counsellors and caregivers have had conversations with the child and her relatives about her education, her health, and her future prospects, so we’d like you all to know that the medical assessment on the child it indicates that she is not pregnant and she has no immediate health concerns.”
