Employment placements: GUNMA issues one-month ultimatum to Finance Ministry

Members of the Rotational Nurses and Midwifery Association, supported by Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives, demonstrated on the streets of Accra on Tuesday (16 April) in the heavy downpour

The Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association (GUNMA) has given the Ministry of Finance (MoF) a one-month deadline to respond to their concerns over delayed employment placements.

This follows a tense demonstration on Tuesday (16 April), where GUNMA members, joined by the Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association, marched through Accra in heavy rain.

The protest targeted both the Ministry of Health (MoH) and MoF, accusing them of failing to grant financial clearance for new posting since 2020. This clearance is a critical step in securing permanent employment for qualified graduates.

GUNMA’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Sarah Mensah, spoke exclusively to Asaase Radio after their meetings with government officials. Mensah expressed cautious optimism that the MoF would address their grievances within the allotted timeframe.

“We moved to the Ministry of Finance, where we also met some officials, including their Public Relations Officer and we had a meeting with them for over forty minutes,” Mensah said.

“We came to the conclusion that we are giving them a one-month period of time to look into our issue and then give us the appropriate response we are waiting for, and so as it stands, we are hoping that within this one-month period or before the one-month period they will call us and give us the information or the response we are expecting from them or better still, give us our employment.”

GUNMA’s demonstration also included a visit to Parliament House. Although Parliament is currently in recess, according to the GUNMA PRO, officials assured the group that their petition would be relayed to the Speaker, with a response expected in due course.

“We went to Parliament House to look for the Honourable Speaker but unfortunately, Parliament is on recession but the officials who received our petition have promised that they will relay our information to the Honourable Speaker and we will get the feedback from them as well.”
