Domestic violence: State institutions lack commitment in tackling problem, says Dwamena-Aboagye

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (5 May), Dwamena-Aboagye called on state institutions to be proactive in tackling domestic violence

The executive director of the Ark Foundation, Angela Dwamena-Aboagye, has said that state institutions lack the commitment to tackle the challenge of domestic violence and abuse in Ghana.

Dwamena-Aboagye’s comment follows a recent spate of domestic abuse in the country, the latest case being the killing of a woman by her policeman boyfriend in Kumasi.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (5 May), Dwamena-Aboagye called on state institutions to tackle such problems proactively.

“Domestic abuse is not surprising. You’ve seen the statistics. This is Ghana and it happens in different forms.

“The truth of the matter is that there’s a system where state institutions are supposed to support domestic abuse victims but it’s not happening.

“There’s supposed to be a fund [as set out] in the Domestic Violence Act that has not happened because the mechanism to start the operation hasn’t even started,” she said.
