Revenue mobilisation drive: ECG recoups 70% of debts in Ashanti Region

The power distributor said it was able to retrieve over 70% of debts owed the company through the exercise which ended on Thursday 20 April.

The ECG embarked on a month-long revenue mobilization exercise across the country to retrieve over GHC5.7 billion debt owed the company. Out of the total debt, the Ashanti Region accounts for GHC1.2 billion.

The Ashanti Regional public relations officer of the ECG, Grace Garshong, who spoke to Asaase Radio stated that although the company has encountered some challenges, including the resistance of some customers to pay, it is satisfied with the outcome.

She said, “It was successful. We couldn’t retrieve everything, but at least, we were able to retrieve more than 70%… 70% is good, because it is more than 50%. But there were challenges. It [the revenue mobilisation exercise] brought out a lot of expose because we went there not only to disconnect. The main aim was revenue mobilization, but there were some of them who have not paid and were not ready to pay which we had to disconnect.”

Garshong stated that the ECG has engaged about 20 senior high schools which were said to have been involved in illegal connections to resolve the situation.

She said, “There were some senior high schools where some illegalities were detected, so we have met the schools and talked to them. It will be rectified, and they will be billed.”

The ECG has also issued a stern warning to defaulters and people engaged in power theft, urging them to desist from such illegal activities. The company has emphasized that it will not hesitate to take legal action against anyone found guilty of such offences.

Garshong said, “Those who are owing ECG shouldn’t wait for us to come to their premises. Those who are involved in illegal connections should also ensure that it is rectified before we get to their premises because when we come out there and we see it, apart from the debt you are owing and the penalty you will pay, the law will also deal with you.”

The PRO noted that, although the mobilisation exercise has ended, the company will ensure effective monitoring, particularly customers who were disconnected during the exercise to ensure that they pay their debt.
