The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has served notice once again that it will embark on a nationwide revenue mobilisation exercise, beginning Monday (29 May).

The exercise, expected to end on 2 June, according to ECG, will focus on all categories of customers in arrears including state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

A statement issued by ECG on Tuesday (23 May), said it will operate with a lean workforce to ensure its top management and staff embark on the nationwide exercise.

Recovery

ECG recovered GHC3.1 billion out of the GHC5.7 billion debt owed by customers across the country after a month-long national revenue mobilisation exercise in April.

Addressing the media in Accra on Thursday (4 May), after the exercise, the MD of ECG, Samuel Mahama said: “The number of companies that have collapsed that we cannot find in terms of some taking the meters and some of them the physical location not present, their total bills put together is about GHC750 million.”

He also said that there is a bad debt of about GHC750 million because those customers lost their structures in waterways or were affected by a demolition exercise.

Spared

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is assuring customers they will be spared if they report staff of the company who connected them illegally to the national grid.

Mahama called for a collaborative effort in dealing with power theft.

“If you are the bad nut, report yourself to me, let me fix it by giving you a flat rate, if you don’t and I come to you, you will face the full rigorous of the law,” he warned.

“I will forgive if you point out who did the illegal connection for you, that’s my challenge to you,” Mahama said.
