Fred Amugi: Acting has not been financially rewarding
In an interview with Jackie Ankrah on Lifestyle ABC, the actor said: "From the time I started till now, it is the passion that sustains me in the industry. Financially it hasn’t been too good"
The veteran actor Fred Nii Amugi has said that acting has not been financially rewarding, adding the new crop of performers are earning more.
Talking to Jackie Ankrah on Asaase Radio’s Lifestyle ABC on Saturday (26 March), the actor said: “Even now when they (movie producers) call you and you charge them they will refuse and prefer to pay the new actors bigger money than we the so called veterans and I think it’s not too good.”
The 73-year-old actor added that it is his commitment to the industry that keeps him going.
“From the time I started till now, it is the passion that sustains me in the industry. Financially it hasn’t been too good,” he said. “What are the younger people coming to accomplish that I haven’t already done, and it’s not that I’m now coming to leave my imprint in the sector now.”

Touching on his experience and relationship with his followers, he said: “I’m so used to the shouting and the chasing from fans but sometimes when you are in a hurry, they just stop you without consideration. And when you try to reason with them because maybe time is beating you, they just misunderstand you and they start saying ‘that’s how we all are’.”
However, Amugi added that, “but when I have time, I always spend quality time and even take pictures with them. There are very elderly people I meet, they stop me to admire my work because I have inspired them.”
