Galamsey at Tano-Anwia Forest Reserve: CHRAJ petitioned to probe negligence of Forestry Commission officials
Report suggests the Enchi District of the Forestry Commission knew about the mining activity months earlier but failed to act or trigger the necessary protocols to stop the illegality
Two Ghanaians based in Germany have petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate alleged negligence on the part of Forestry Commission officials leading to illegal mining in the Tano-Anwia Forest Reserve.
The move comes after an illegal miner invaded the Tano-Anwia forest reserve, a key biodiversity area of international significance, destroying more than seven football fields of the protected forest in the Western Region.
Report suggests the Enchi District of the Forestry Commission knew about the mining activity months earlier but failed to act or trigger the necessary protocols to stop the illegality.
The two Ghanaians who doubles as directors for Centre for Climate Change and Food Security in the petition dated 5 January 2024, want CHRAJ to impose sanctions, where necessary and applicable to the culprits.
