Ghana remains committed to promote STEAM education, says Adutwum

The education minister says the government will continue to invest in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) programmes

The Minister of Education, Yaw Osei Adutwum, has said the government is committed to promote the advancement of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) programmes in Ghana.

The chief director at the Ministry of Education, Maamle Andrew, addressing the 8th congregation of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani on behalf of the minister, said that STEAM education is the way to drive the socio-economic development of the country.

According to him, that is why the government is investing in infrastructure to strengthen STEM education in Ghana.

The 8th congregation of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) was under the theme: “Fostering future leaders via STEAM education.”

A total of 2,451 students graduated, with 1,496 representing 65.28% males and 34.72% representing 851 females.

Addressing the congregation, the vice chancellor of UENR, Prof Elvis Asare-Bediako, said this underscores the strides UENR is making towards gender parity in STEAM education.

“2,159 of them, representing 88.09%, have earned their bachelor’s degrees. Moreover, 178, representing 7.26%, have achieved diplomas, while 114, representing 4.65%, have reached the pinnacle of academic excellence by attaining postgraduate qualifications. Furthermore, 1,496 males, representing 65.28%, and 851 females, representing 34.72%,.

“These numbers underscore the strides we continue to make towards gender parity in education, highlighting the remarkable contributions of both men and women in our academic journey,” said Asare-Bediako.

Asare-Bediako also outlined the activities, successes and projects the university has undertaken so far. Among them is a Centre for Research in Neglected Tropical Diseases constructed by the university and the inauguration of a state-of-the-art carbon flux monitoring tower in the Bia Tano Forest Reserve in the Ahafo region, which is significantly contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu Banahene, who was the Special Guest of Honour said STEAM education empowers individuals to become catalysts for positive change in their communities and beyond. She encouraged the graduates to approach their careers with a sense of responsibility.

Deborah Akanyare, BSc Nursing, was adjourned the best graduating student with a 3.94 FGPA.
