Ghanaians Abroad: Partey impresses, Williams bags brace

The Williams brothers, Iñaki and Nico, combine to secure a nine-man Athletic Club victory over Getafe

Several Ghanaian footballers put in strong performances for their clubs across Europe’s top leagues this weekend. Here’s a roundup of their displays:

Premier League

  • Thomas Partey (Arsenal): The midfielder was a rock in the middle of the park for Arsenal in their convincing 3-0 win over Bournemouth. Partey dominated defensively, winning all his aerial duels and most of his ground battles. While he only had one key pass, his overall control helped Arsenal dictate the tempo.
  • Mohammed Kudus (Chelsea): Though on the losing side in Chelsea’s 5-0 hammering of West Ham, Kudus displayed flashes of brilliance. The midfielder completed most of his dribbles and showed good defensive awareness.

La Liga

  • Iñaki Williams (Athletic Bilbao): The forward enjoyed a dream outing, scoring a brace as Athletic Bilbao secured a vital 2-0 victory over Getafe, even with two red cards. Williams, deployed as a striker in this match, showcased his attacking prowess, with both goals coming from assists by his brother Nico Williams.
  • Abdul Mumin (Rayo Vallecano): Despite his team’s 1-0 defeat to Almeria, Mumin impressed defensively. The Ghanaian centre-back made crucial clearances, interceptions, and tackles, showcasing his strong aerial presence. He did, however, concede a yellow card late in the game.

Serie A

  • Caleb Ekuban (Genoa): Ekuban was a bright spark for Genoa in their thrilling 3-3 draw against AC Milan. The Ghanaian striker got on the scoresheet, combining well with a teammate to put Genoa ahead for the second time in the match.
  • Alfred Duncan (Fiorentina): Duncan endured a forgettable game for Fiorentina, struggling with his passing accuracy and possession before being substituted.
  • Emmanuel Gyasi (Empoli): The wing-back had a poor outing for Empoli in their goalless draw against Frosinone, losing possession on several occasions and making misplaced passes.

Ligue 1

  • Andre Ayew (Le Havre): The experienced attacker scored a crucial goal in Le Havre’s 3-1 victory over RC Strasbourg. Ayew’s goal in stoppage time sealed the win for his team.
  • Salis Abdul Samed (RC Lens): The midfielder came on as a substitute in Lens’ 2-0 win over Lorient and made a positive impact with a perfect passing record and clearances.
