Ghana’s Hockey Queens seal gold at 13th African Games in dramatic penalty shootout

Ghana defeats rivals Nigeria in an entertaining 4-3 victory on penalties

Ghana’s women’s hockey team has clinched the nation’s 12th gold medal at the ongoing 13th African Games. The Black Sticks emerged victorious in a penalty shootout against Nigeria following a tense 0-0 draw in regulation time at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium on Friday (22 March).

Ghana’s path to gold began with a convincing 4-1 win over Kenya. They then displayed their dominance over Nigeria with a narrow 1-0 victory during the group stage, foreshadowing the epic final clash.

With neither team able to break the deadlock after a full 60 minutes in the final, the intensity cranked up a notch as the game went to penalties.

The Black Sticks held their nerve, converting all four attempts from the penalty spot. Nigeria, despite a valiant effort, faltered, handing Ghana a thrilling 4-3 victory.

This triumph not only secures Ghana’s 12th gold medal but also sees them maintain their place on the overall medal table. They currently sit comfortably in sixth place with an impressive medal haul of 52 (12 gold, 24 silver, and 16 bronze).
