All public teachers to receive remaining laptops by June, says Adutwum

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) says over 100,000 public school teachers have yet to receive the laptops they have been deducted for since 2021

Yaw Osei Adutwum, the education minister has said all the remaining laptops to be distributed to teachers in the country will be done by June this year.

The president of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Rev Isaac Owusu said over 100,000 public school teachers have yet to receive the laptops they have been deducted for since 2021.

On Monday (25 March), President Akufo-Addo launched the Ghana Smart School project to distribute 1.3 million tablets to public senior high school and TVET students, teacher unions have raised red flags over the government’s failure to deliver on its promise under the 1 Teacher 1 Laptop project.

But speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (26 March), Adutwum said, “The teachers’ devices have been distributed there are a few that needs to be distributed and I’ve been assured by the company and GES that by the end of June every teacher will get. It will be done.”

“If we can do 450,000 [for students] whatever is left for teachers can be done,” the minister added.

Smart Schools

President Akufo-Addo has said at least thirty Smart Schools are expected to be built across the country by the end of this year under the Ghana Smart Schools project.

The initiative aims to bolster senior high school education by providing teaching and learning management systems, digital learning content and electronic devices to all senior high and TVET schools nationwide.

The project aligns with the Ministry of Education’s digitalisation agenda for pre-tertiary education and supports the government’s goal of leveraging technological advancements to prepare Ghanaian students for the fourth industrial revolution.
