Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has initiated a campaign with the goal of raising US$10 million for the renovation and rehabilitation of the old ‘GEE’ Blocks at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The grand launch of the “#HealKomfoAnokye”, is part of the king’s legacy project, marking his 25th-anniversary celebrations on his enstoolment of the Golden Stool.
The initiative is also expected to provide a significant boost to health delivery in the Ashanti Region and beyond as concerns over the deteriorating condition of these crucial wards at the nation’s second biggest referral center, continue to grow.
A special event was held on Friday (10 November) at the hospital, to kick-start the campaign. The chief executive officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah stressed management’s commitment to ensuring that the facility reached standards and would be every patient’s choice. He however made a strong case about the need to revamp the old ‘GEE’ block to make this dream a reality.
“Regrettably, by virtue of its position as the sole tertiary hospital for this part of the country, the persistent over-utilization and subsequent wear and tear over the years, have left this hitherto impressive structure in a state that is simply unfit for the provision of contemporary specialist in-patient care centre.
“This is due to the fact that the blocks which contains all the wards and other in-patient facilities have never undergone any comprehensive renovation in its close to 70-year history due to the nation’s limited resources… “We need to raise these funds to put Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in a good light and ensure that rather than anything those who visit can have best conditions to receive care”, he added.
For his part the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, expressed dismay over the current state of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, calling it a disgrace to the region’s residents.
He emphasised the need to raise US$10 million to transform the hospital environment into one that aids in patient healing.
“As a community, we can collectively raise the US$10 million needed. I urge everyone in Ashanti and beyond to contribute to this fundraising drive,” stated the Asantehene, making a special appeal to Members of Parliament, Ministers of State, affluent individuals, and corporate entities to support the project.
Noting that KATH serves people from 12 regions, Otumfuo urged Ashanti MPs and Ministers to take the lead in fundraising efforts. He called on households to contribute to collectively elevate KATH to a state of pride.
The Asantehene directed a pointed message to MPs and Ministers from Ashanti, urging them to actively participate in fundraising and emphasizing the importance of not neglecting their roots by only residing in Accra.
