Hijacked Ghana-flagged vessel docks at Tema

The hijacked tuna fishing trawler, manned by five Koreans and a Ghanaian, comes back in to port … but without the crew

Ghana News Agency (Tema) – The Ghana-flagged tuna purse seine vessel hijacked by pirates in waters off Benin on Wednesday has been located and guided in to Tema Port by the Ghana Navy.

However, the five Korean members of the crew, who included the captain of the vessel, together with the one Ghanaian taken captive by the pirates, are yet to be located.

Lieutenant Commander Felix Tsekpetse, assistant director of naval operations, told the Ghana News Agency that the vessel was met by the Ghana Navy at the Ghana-Togo border and brought to anchorage on Thursday.

Attacked by pirates

Lieutenant Tsekpetse said that, apart from those taken captive, all other crew members were safe. The Ghana Navy is yet to receive any information about the captives, he said.

The appropriate agencies at the port were investigating the matter with the help of the navy with the aim of unravelling the circumstances leading to the hijack.

The vessel, the Panofi Frontier, was hijacked at about 2pm on Wednesday by pirates who are believed to be Nigerian.
