People Management

Hiring…Character or skill?

They are both important. A good worker with good skills but with a bad character like stealing is redundant. A worker with a good character who lacks adequate skills is also redundant.

So in hiring you need to look for the candidate that’s best suited for the role.

You can do this well with a job description and person specification, along with some basic assessments to test for competence to do the job, and perhaps personality profiling or behaviour competency questions to assess character.

Company and job fit is key when looking for the talent for your organisation. Both character and skill is important and so you have to look out for both.

Today’s post was an answer to the question “Hiring…character or skill?” published on Quest. Quest is a Q&A forum for the business community. Post any business related question you have and receive answers from experienced industry experts.
