Hopeson Adorye granted GHC20,000 bail

Adorye was arrested on Wednesday, (22 May) over his claim that he detonated dynamites in the Volta Region during the 2016 general elections

A  Dansoman court has granted the leading member of the Movement for Change, Hopeson Adorye, GHC20,000 bail with two sureties on Thursday (23 May).

He was arrested on Wednesday, (22 May) over his claim that he detonated dynamites in the Volta Region during the 2016 general elections.

Adorye revealed details of an alleged operation he led to deter Togolese nationals from participating in Ghana’s 2016 general elections.

The bail granted by the Dansoman Circuit Court, presided over by Alima Abdul El-Lawal Bassit, comes after both the prosecution and lawyer for the leading members of the Movement for Change argued why the court should or should not grant the accused Hopeson Adorye bail.

It was the case of the prosecution that the claims made by the accused were of national interest and bordered on national security; hence, the court should not grant him bail in order to help the police assist in the investigation.

On their part, the lawyer for Hopeson Adorye countered that the accused is a public figure and a professional teacher with 20 years of experience; hence, he is not a flight risk.

Kweku Attakra Dwumah, the lawyer for Hopeson Adorye, further prayed for the court to rely on Martin Kpebu VS Attorney No. 2 to exercise its discretion.

It was upon this submission that the court granted the leading member of the Movement for Change a GHC20,000 bail with two sureties, with one to be justified.

In an interview on Accra-based radio station on Thursday (16 May 2024), Adorye disclosed that the alleged operation took place at the Togo border.

This assertion raised significant concerns and led to his arrest.
