A former drug addict John Asogonnde has said a sermon by the general overseer of the International Central Gospel Centre (ICGCMensah Otabil, became the turning point in ending his addiction.

Asogonnde is currently the author of “Unchained” a book chronicling his experience of breaking away from drug addiction. He also operates Eden Bar, described as Ghana’s first non-alcoholic bar.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (23 MayAsogonnde said he started smoking marijuana at the university after engaging in other vices.

“I was in my room smoking and looking through music videos on YouTube, then the sermon [from Pastor Mensa Otabil] popped up out from nowhere,

The title of that message was “Stepping out from your Prison.”

“And the title caught my attention because my life at that point was like I was in prison. Nothing was working out for me. And so, I decided to listen to him [Pastor Mensa Otabil]. And he talked about Peter in the Bible when he was imprisoned. God didn’t just go and pluck him out of the prison,” he said.

“And so, I immediately understood that the place I found myself, this misery I found myself in, if anything was going to change, I had to consciously take efforts to step out of the situation…”
