African Games: Naysayers have been shamed – Akufo-Addo jabs Mahama

It will be recalled that former President John Dramani Mahama, called on the government to pull out of hosting the 2023 African Games

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has jabbed the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama for his disparaging remarks before Ghana hosted the 2023 African Games, in Accra.

The President, in his congratulatory message to Ghanaians over the successful end to the 2023 All African Games, thanked Ghanaians for standing solidly behind him and not listening to the perennial flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, who called for the cancellation of the games a few months ago.

‘’To the people of Ghana, I thank you for believing in the ability of the Government to host the games, the first in our history. I am also grateful that you did not listen to the naysayers (John Mahama) who doubted our nation’s resolve, and urged us to cancel the games’’ his statement reads.

It will be recalled that former President John Dramani Mahama, called on the government to pull out of hosting the 2023 African Games which was expected to take off in August 2023 in Ghana.

According to Mahama, it was not advisable to commit resources to host the multi-sport event with the current economic conditions the country is facing.

“If it’s not too late, we can pull out of hosting the African Games, as it will severely stretch our precarious finances by hundreds of millions of cedis,” Mahama said in a speech.

President Akufo-Addo ignored Mahama’s calls for the games to be canceled as he ensured that all the support needed by the organizers and contractors was made available to them for the completion of the infrastructure and all the other accouterments needed for the games to be successful.

Ghana has won a record 68 medals in the competition with notable victories in the women’s and men’s football, high jumping, 200 meters, and relay race, amongst other events.
